Should You Block Low Paying Ads or Not?

If you look for tips to increase your Google Adsense incomes, you will definitely be told to block low paying ads. But is this effective? Some people claim that they successfully increase their incomes by 10% - 50% by doing it. But many others said that they got no result! So, is this real, or just a myth?

Basically, it is a fact that blocking low paying ads will increase your incomes. But it only happens if you block the "real" low paying ads. The problem is (and not many people realize it), it is not easy to determine whether an ad is low paying or not. There are many factors involved. Please remember that Google never gave a suggestion to block low paying ads to increase your incomes! What they gave was just a tool to block competitive ads! They have reasons for this, here they are:

  • Google has confirmed that High Paying Ads are prioritized.
They always show the highest paying ads first. So if your website shows too many low paying ads, there is possibility that there are not many high paying ads for your selected keywords. If this is correct, filtering low paying ads will not help. It will even make your website running out of ads. And if this happens, Google will show PSAs (Public Service Ads) in your website, and you will not get any fees.
  • Most of Google Adsense Ads are Geo Targeted Ads.
When a visitor accesses your website, first Google will check where he/ she comes from, and then serve Adsense Ads based on these informations. So if your visitor is US based, most of the Ads will be US based. If your visitor comes from Australia, most of the Ads will be Australia based too. Sometimes, a US advertiser agrees to serve his ad for Australian visitors. But, he will pay less. Of course this will affect your fees. A US based visitor who clicks US based Ads will produce higher fee than an Australian visitor who click US based Ads. Now for example, there are many Australian visitors click your US based ads. You check your Google Adsense stats; there is High CTR but totally low income. You then block these ads without knowing the reality that they actually are high paying Ads for US based visitors!
  • The same advertiser can bid for multiple campaigns.
Now imagine this case, www.justs4mples.com creates 3 campaigns; for the first keyword, they agree to pay $0.02/click. For the second keyword, they pay $0.50/ click. And for the third keyword, they pay $0.75/ click. Suppose the first ad appears in one of your pages, and many people click it. You check your stats, unsatisfied with its fees, and misjudge it as low paying ad. You eventually block www.justs4mples.com, without knowing that they pay much higher for other keywords.

You may block low paying ads to increase your incomes; but as I said in my other article, it is not efficient and very risky. So, we shouldn't block any low paying ads? Not really. Have you ever heard about MFA (Made For Adsense) websites? MFA websites have no contents (they are just filled with PPC Ads), and were developed to drag money from Adsense. How can they do that?

  • First they create a website, there's nothing inside. Just a title (such as cell phone), and links to PPC ads (such as Google Adsense). They are targeting high paying keywords, so what appear in their websites are also high paying ads.
  • Then they create a campaign in Google Adwords, targeting some keywords, and bid the lowest price (less than $0.05/ click).
  • Their website will show up in many websites as Google Adsense ads. Once their ads are clicked; they will pay less than $0.05/ click and visitors will be brought to their websites. If these visitors click the ads in their websites, they will earn more than $0.5.

Should you block these kinds of websites? Definitely yes. Why?

  1. They are the REAL low paying ads. Adsense publishers all around the globe are complaining about MFA websites. They all agree that these websites just pay less than $0.05/ click. So it's not the matter of geo targeted.
  2. They just hurt your reputation. MFA websites do not give any added values to your website since they do not have contents. Many people do not know that they are ads, and misjudge them as your internal links. Many webmasters have been complained by their visitors for giving useless links. It's better to block those ads, and take a risk to get PSAs than letting your visitors disappointed and then leave your website.
  3. There is possibility that they create more than one campaign. But I believe none of them are worth more than $0.1/ click. MFA websites will not take a risk to bid too high since their ROI are very low.

How can you detect MFA websites?

  • If you find ads that started their URL with 10-bestsites, 8-top-sites, 25-topsites, etc, they usually are MFA websites. You may check their website to make sure.
  • Using a service provided by AdsBlackList. This website is collecting informations (about low paying ads and MFAs) from their members and automatically generating a list for you. You may choose to include low paying ads and MFAs in your list, or just one of them.
